Abstract: On the instationary simulation of the free fall of a solid body in a Newtonian fluid

The numerical simulation of the free fall of a rigid particle in a fluid is a challenging task since the fluid/particle motion is highly coupled. In earlier work (diploma thesis) I restricted myself to the simu- lation of the stationary counterpart of this problem. Meanwhile I'm able to solve numerically the full instationary equations by means of a semi-implicit time-stepping scheme. In my talk I will first give a short overview of the phenomenology of this problem. Then I will present the solver and compare the results to experimental data.
